Betel nut is chewed by thousands of people around the world. In the Maldives many people chew it everyday.It is commonly chewed wrapped around the Piper Betle Vine ( Bilaiy). To add flavour lime is added or it can be mixed with tobacco or other flavours.

WHO estimated that 600 million people use it worldwide but it also has the distinction of being a psychoactive substance like nicotine alcohol and caffeine. Betel is now identified as a health hazard due to the serious health risks associated with its regular use .


WHY DO PEOPLE TAKE BETEL NUTS AND WHAT ARE THE RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH IT’S USE?

It induces an energy boost due to the nuts natural alkaloids that release adrenaline .Some people also feel euphoric and a sense of well being after taking the betel nuts. However it’s harmful effects are far more than any potential benefits .

For instance people using betel nuts end up with a condition called oral sub mucous fibrosis that makes the mouth stiff and eventually restrict jaw movement .Nuts can permanently stain the teeth to a deep red or black colour and even cause gum irritation and tooth decay .Some studies also link Betel nut with Heart Disease , Metabolic syndrome and Obesity .Oral cancers and oesophageal cancers are also associated with Betel nuts as well as low birth weight .
